Multiplicity

 Multiplicity:
Abundance, Strength and Beauty

Kimberly Young & Margarete Bagshaw

Opening Reception - April 25, 2009

“Multiplicity,” an exciting display of pottery and paintings was recently held at the Everyday Clay Studio on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.

The show featured well-known Santa Fe modernist Margarete Bagshaw, and debuted her transition from painting oils on panels and canvas, to her new medium – oil painting on clay.  Following in the family tradition of her mother, painter Helen Hardin, and grandmother, painter Pablita Velarde, Margarete has developed a unique style that combines three-dimensional abstract geometric forms in a postmodern way.  With this show Margarete premiered her new clay relief slabs that were raku fired and then finished with oil paints.

Modernist, Margarete Bagshaw presented new paintings with boldly colored abstract shapes, twists and turns, amongst thoughtfully placed designs and motifs. "My heritage shows up in my patterns and back grounds, but my paintings are composed in a very post modern way." She will also be showing pieces from her new collection of clay work. She describes them as her paintings on clay.

The theme and title of the show, “Multiplicity” helps to describe the artwork that will be shown. Young, traditionally a potter, has created mixed media and installation pieces that contain large numbers of tiny pieces. Always being interested in the rhythms and patterns in nature, or how parts come together as a whole to create tension, Young has produced several works that display a “unity in numbers.”

Bagshaw’s boldly colored abstract shapes, patterns and shallow carving in the clay, nicely compliments new ceramic works and installation pieces by gallery owner Kimberly Young.  Young created large mixed media installations that contain a number of tiny ceramic objects.  All of Kimberly’s installation pieces were detailed, interesting and original – both in concept and implementation. The number of pieces in all of the installation works came together beautifully to create a serendipitous relationship of multiplicity.

Together these two artists presented a show that was fresh, exciting and thought provoking.
